Sound signals at sea are made by a "whistle" (often a horn), a bell and a gong. A short blast (about 1 seconds duration) is depicted by a short horn, and a prolonged blast (four to six seconds duration) by a long horn. A single stroke on a bell is known as *bell image*, and a ringing as a *sounding bell image". The gong is illustranted by *gong image*. Any specific time period or interval is stated. Many of the signals are shown as being made under fog conditions. Light signlas may supplement whistle signals, shows as *image*. In the distress signal long and short flashes are shown.
