LATERAL MARKS
These are similar to those in use for some time, save that green in used for for Starboard Hand Marks instead of black. Lateral marks indicate the Port and Starboard hands of channels used in conjuncation with a conventional direction of buoyage, defined as:-
a) Local direction - taken by the mariner when approaching a harbour, estuary, or other waterway from seaward.
b) General Direction- determined by the authorities, following a clockwise direction around continental land masses and indicated on charts by a symbol.
Around the British Isles the firection will run Northward along the W. coasts and through the Irish Sea. Eastward through the English Channel and Northward through the North Sea.
CARDINAL MARKS
Used in conjunstion with the compass to indicate the best nevigatable water, the mariner is safe if he passes to the North of a North mark, East of an East mark and so on. The Black double cone topmarks are the most important feature.
ISOLATED DANGER MARKS
Erected on or above an isolated danger of limited extent, the black double sphere topmark is the most important feature.
SAFE WATER MARKS
Indicate navigable water all round the mark. Probably used as a centreline mid-channel or landfall buoy.
SPECIAL MARKS
Used to indicate a special area or feature which may be determined from the chart such as:-
Oceanographic or Met. buoys
Military excerside zone marks
Traffic separation marks
Spoil Ground marks
Cable or pipeline marks
Recreation zone marks
